Why should I use Hyaluronic Acid in the colder months of the year?

Hyaluronic acid is especially useful during the winter months due to the harsh weather conditions that dry out your skin. The skin is our protective organ in the body, and we need to protect our skin barrier. Hyaluronic Acid supports dry, dehydrated, and mature skins and keeps our barrier intact.

Hyaluronic Acid is naturally found in the skin and is a powerful moisture magnet. When we age the body’s natural supply of Hyaluronic Acid deteriorates, resulting in drier skin, loss of firmness, and fine lines.  A decrease in Hyaluronic Acid can cause premature ageing. Acute and chronic dehydration contributes to skin inflammation and sensitivity, leaving the skin feeling tight, irritated, and rough. Introducing more Hyaluronic Acid into your skin helps diminish fine lines and deeper wrinkles and your skin will feel intensely hydrated.

What is Hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is a water-loving substance. The body makes Hyaluronic Acid naturally, and it is found in most cells of the body. The highest concentration is found in the skin. As we age we make less of this amazing substance, this can result in lines and wrinkles. That's why the beauty industry uses Hyaluronic Acid in most of their cosmetic formulations and supplements!

Water is the skin's best friend! Water between skin cells and structures depend on Hyaluronic Acid. When the skin has a high water content it appears more supple and plump, lines on the face are less visible.

What if I use Hyaluronic Acid as a supplement? How does it differ from collagen?

Hyaluronic Acid is a simple structure and can be absorbed in the digestive tract; it does not need to be broken down, like a vitamin and mineral. Collagen supplements need to be broken down to be able for the body to use it. While research shows that Hyaluronic Acid migrates to the relevant tissues, it is suggested that taking Hyaluronic Acid supplements can reduce wrinkles and improve hydration and joint pain.

What about Hyaluronic Acid and ceramides?

Skin Moisture Lock™ supplement has ceramides fused with Hyaluronic Acid which works from the inside out, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and keeps the skin plump. Hyaluronic Acid is fused with ceramides which are lipids that occur in the top layers of the skin. They keep a waterproof protective barrier in the skin, which is very important for the cold season.

Can I get hyaluronic acid from food?

  • Yes, your best source would be bone broth.

  • Root vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and Jerusalem artichokes may increase the production of Hyaluronic Acid.

  • Leafy greens are high in magnesium which acts as a catalyst in producing Hyaluronic Acid.

Can I use hyaluronic acid topically?

There are creams, serums, lotions, and foams that have Hyaluronic Acid inside. Hyaluronic Acid in skincare products can improve moisture in the skin and reduce signs of ageing. Here are some of my favourites: Nimue Hyaluronic Ultra Filler, Nimue Hyaluronic Oil, Hyla Active, and Hyla Active 3D Sculptured Mask.

What are the other benefits of hyaluronic acid?

People are aware of Hyaluronic Acid as an ingredient in skincare but may not know of its versatility. It also helps with wound healing by improving tissue repair and reducing inflammation. Hyaluronic Acid can significantly decrease the depth of wrinkles and enhance skin firmness and elasticity. It can also improve mild eczema. Hyaluronic Acid in eye drops can alleviate eye dryness. Some people have had success treating vaginal dryness with it, especially for those who cannot use hormonal treatment such as oestrogen cream could use Hyaluronic Acid to help ease symptoms.

Using Hyaluronic Acid supplements or topical products can help people maintain a youthful appearance and tackle ageing. But it can also help treat some medical conditions.
